At Daviess Community Hospital (DCH), we celebrate the compassion, dedication, and skill of our nurses through the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. This international recognition program honors nurses who provide exceptional, compassionate care every day.

The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who passed away from complications of an autoimmune disease. Deeply touched by the care and kindness shown by nurses during Patrick’s hospitalization, his family created the DAISY Award as a meaningful way to say “thank you” to nurses everywhere.

Daviess Community Hospital is proud to be a DAISY Award partner, recognizing and celebrating the incredible nurses who make a difference in the lives of our patients and their families.

DCH DAISY Award Criteria: PETALS

At DCH, we use the PETALS criteria to select our DAISY Award honorees. Nurses nominated for this award consistently demonstrate the following qualities:

• P - Passion: Demonstrates compassion and enthusiasm for nursing and patient care.
• E - Empathy: Shows deep understanding and sensitivity to the needs of patients and families.
• T - Trust & Teamwork: Builds strong relationships with families, patients, and peers through trust and collaboration.
• A - Admirable Attributes: Displays exceptional character, professionalism, and dedication.
• L - Love for the Profession: Exemplifies a true calling to nursing and patient-centered care.
• S - Selflessness: Puts the needs of patients and their families first, going above and beyond to provide extraordinary care.

Who Can Nominate a Nurse for the DAISY Award?

Anyone who has experienced extraordinary care from a nurse can submit a nomination, including:

• Patients
• Family members
• Visitors
• DCH staff members

How to Nominate a Nurse

Recognize a nurse who has made an impact by completing a DAISY Award nomination. You can submit your DAISY Award nomination form in one of the following ways:

• Online: Fill out our DAISY Nomination Form
• In Person: Drop a completed nomination form in one of the DAISY nomination boxes located throughout the hospital.

The DAISY Award Ceremony

Each DAISY Award Honoree is recognized in a special public ceremony in their unit. Award recipients receive:

• A DAISY Award pin
• A beautiful certificate
• A hand-carved "A Healer’s Touch" stone sculpture
• A unit-wide celebration with cinnamon rolls—Patrick’s favorite treat, symbolizing the DAISY Foundation’s heartfelt appreciation for nurses.

The Barnes Family encourages nurses to take a moment, whenever they smell cinnamon rolls, to remember how special and valued they are.
