Daviess Community Hospital Announces 1st Baby of 2023

January 3, 2023 (Washington, IN) — Several babies were born in the days leading up to the new year, but it wasn’t until January 2nd that the first baby of 2023 came into the world at Daviess Community Hospital.

Austin and Bailey Ashby had been counting the days until their second child was due to be born. “I went to my regular appointment with Dr. Dennis Atienza at Heartland OBGYN on December 27th,” Bailey explained. “He recommended that I come in to the hospital on January 2nd since this would be my second c-section. Dr. Atienza explained that one of his partners, Dr. John Stafford, would be delivering our baby because he would be out of town that week.”

On the morning of January 2nd, Austin and Brittany traveled to Washington from their home in Winslow where Bailey was admitted to the OB unit at DCH. At 8:40a.m., little Waylyn Michelle Ashby arrived, weighing in at 6lbs, 6 oz. The couple was excited to learn that Waylyn was officially the first baby of 2023 born at DCH.

“The doctors, nurses and lactation team who took care of us before, during and after the birth were awesome,” the new parents said. “Our son was born a year ago at a larger hospital and we feel like this was a much better experience.”

The Ashby’s were also grateful for the expert pediatric care given to Waylyn by Dr. Tanya de la Vergne, DCH Pediatrician. “Dr. de la Vergne was great to explain any tests that were done and listened to our questions about the results,” Bailey said.

Luckily for Waylyn, being the first born of 2023 at DCH came with some perks. The baby’s gift from DCH includes a giant wagon filled with shampoo, lotion, a giant Snoopy, toys, a baby book, diapers and more.

In 2022, there were 459 babies born at Daviess Community Hospital. Shawna O’Kelley Brinson, Director of OB/Nursery, remarked, “Our numbers remain consistent from year to year. With the great reputation of our Women’s Health Center and the three highly skilled OB physicians here in Washington, we anticipate growth in the coming year.”
