Daviess Community Hospital hosted a Women In Local Leadership (WILL) monthly luncheon

Daviess Community Hospital hosted a Women In Local Leadership (WILL) monthly luncheon on October 4. The theme for this event was “Breast Cancer Education." Featured speakers were Megan Stevenson, MD, who is a board-certified General Surgeon and Sharon Mead, RN, OCN, ONN-CG, who served as the DCH Oncology Patient Navigator.

Sharon spoke first about her role as a personal guide/educator, liaison and advocate for the newly diagnosed cancer patient and their family. She explained how she works with patients and families to help them at many points along the health care continuum. This may include education on the specific disease, insurance questions, finding physicians, explaining the treatment and care options available, and much more.

Sharon also spoke about fundraising efforts within DCH and community organizations to provide much needed assistance to patients who cannot afford screenings, transportation, and more as they move through the steps of diagnosis, treatment and recovery. Sharon concluded her presentation with information about the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust (IBCAT) that is supported by the purchase of license plates for vehicles. DCH has received grants from IBCAT for many years which are helping dozens of patients each year.

Dr. Stevenson is a General Surgeon with Daviess Community Hospital. She has performed numerous lumpectomies and mastectomies in her career. She spoke specifically about types of breast cancer, treatment options, surgeries and the importance of understanding the information when diagnosed.

She explained that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. She emphasized that early detection through a mammogram or breast exam is key to better outcomes. The process of subsequent screening and procedures were also explained thoroughly.
