Daviess Community Hospital Celebrates National Nutrition Month with Culturally-Inspired Healthy Cuisine

In celebration of National Nutrition Month, Daviess Community Hospital (DCH) is recognizing the rich cultural diversity of its staff, patients, and community by featuring culturally-inspired, healthy meals every Thursday in March in the hospital cafeteria. The initiative honors global food traditions while reinforcing the importance of balanced eating habits and inclusivity in healthcare.

Bringing Culture to the Table Through Nutritious Cuisine

Throughout March, the DCH cafeteria will feature a different international or regional cuisine each Thursday during lunch hours, 11 a.m. – 1:15 p.m., offering staff, patients, and visitors the opportunity to explore nutritious meals from various culinary traditions.

Featured Cultural Cuisine Schedule:

  • March 6: Creole-Inspired Cuisine
  • March 13: Latin-Inspired Cuisine
  • March 20: South Asian-Inspired Cuisine
  • March 27: Amish-Style Cuisine

“As a dietitian, I love seeing how every culture has its own unique approach to healthy eating,” said Paige Schaefer, MS, RDN, LD, Clinical Registered Dietitian at DCH. “This initiative celebrates food as a connection to identity, heritage, and community. By featuring these culturally-inspired meals, we want to show that nutritious eating can be inclusive, flavorful, and meaningful. Healthy eating isn’t about restriction—it’s about embracing variety and balance in a way that fits your lifestyle and traditions.”

Promoting Health Through Cultural Awareness

DCH recognizes that food is more than just nourishment—it is a reflection of culture, tradition, and shared experiences. By incorporating global cuisine into National Nutrition Month, the hospital demonstrates its commitment to inclusivity, cultural awareness, and making healthcare a welcoming space for all.

To further engage the community, recipes for each culturally-inspired dish will be available in the cafeteria for all to pick up at no charge. Visitors and staff are encouraged to take these recipes home and explore new, nutritious meal options. However, there will be a charge to purchase meals in the cafeteria.

Encouraging Community Engagement

DCH invites staff, patients, and visitors to enjoy the special Thursday menus and take part in National Nutrition Month by learning more about how cultural traditions can support health and wellness.
