Daviess Community Hospital Unveils New Inpatient Menus and Dining Service

Daviess Community Hospital's Food & Nutrition Services team has introduced new inpatient menus and a revamped meal-ordering system to enhance the patient experience and improve meal quality. Originally introduced to the Acute Care Unit earlier this fall, these personalized menus are now available to all inpatients hospital-wide and include options tailored to various dietary needs, such as heart-healthy, consistent carbohydrate, puree, and easy-to-chew.

The ordering process has been redesigned to improve patient engagement. Previously, patients filled out their menus and submitted them to nursing staff with limited interaction from Food & Nutrition Services. Under the new system, Food & Nutrition Services team members visit each patient to take orders, oversee meal preparation, and deliver meals directly to patients. Team members also follow up with each patient after the meal, ensuring satisfaction and assisting with any requests.

“This new initiative allows us to bring a ‘concierge service’ directly to our patients,” said April Settles, Chief Financial Officer at Daviess Community Hospital. “Our team members engage with each patient, and when family is present, they work together to help patients select options that meet both dietary needs and personal preferences. When patients aren’t feeling well, having a favorite or comfort food can make a big difference.”

The updated system also focuses on balanced nutrition. “Our team encourages patients to make balanced choices to aid in their recovery,” said Settles. “We assist with meal setup at bedside, and our team members return to collect trays and ensure patients were pleased with their dining experience.”

In addition to the new service model, Daviess Community Hospital’s expanded menus include nutrition information, such as carbohydrate counts and sodium content, as well as guidance on healthy choices. The hospital serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner selections to inpatients throughout the day, ensuring flexibility and convenience for all patients.
