CORE Center’s Jamal Wittmer, PT, DPT, Earns Level-2 Dry Needling Certification

CORE Center’s Jamal Wittmer, PT, DPT, Earns Level-2 Dry Needling Certification

Patients suffering from chronic pain, muscle tension, or restricted movement now have access to even more advanced treatment options at both Daviess Community Hospital’s CORE Center locations in Washington and Odon.

Jamal Wittmer, PT, DPT, a physical therapist at CORE Center, has recently earned his Level-2 dry needling certification, expanding his expertise in helping patients find relief from pain and improve mobility.

“Achieving Level-2 certification allows me to provide even more precise and effective treatment for patients dealing with musculoskeletal pain,” Wittmer said. “Dry needling has been an incredible tool for reducing pain and restoring movement, and I’m excited to bring these advanced techniques to my patients.”

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a specialized physical therapy technique that targets myofascial trigger points, commonly known as “muscle knots.” These tight, painful spots in the muscle can cause pain, restricted movement, and discomfort.

During a dry needling session, a thin, filiform needle is inserted into the muscle to:

Release tight trigger points
Reduce pain and inflammation
Improve circulation and oxygen flow to muscles
Enhance mobility and flexibility

Unlike acupuncture, which is based on traditional Chinese medicine, dry needling is rooted in modern physical therapy and focuses on muscle function, neuromuscular health, and pain relief.

How Dry Needling Helps Patients at CORE Center

At CORE Center, Wittmer and the rehabilitation team use dry needling as part of a comprehensive treatment approach to address various conditions, including:

  • Chronic neck and back pain
  • Tension headaches and migraines
  • Sciatica and nerve-related pain
  • Sports injuries and overuse conditions
  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Fibromyalgia and chronic pain syndromes

“Many patients find relief from dry needling when other treatments haven’t worked,” Wittmer said. “It’s a great option for reducing pain and improving movement, whether you’re an athlete, recovering from an injury, or dealing with chronic pain.”

Meet Jamal Wittmer, PT, DPT

A Montgomery, Indiana native and Barr-Reeve High School graduate, Wittmer has been a physical therapist at CORE Center since 2021. He earned his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Western Kentucky University in 2020 and has been practicing dry needling for more than two years.

After earning his Level-1 dry needling certification in June 2022, Wittmer recently completed Level-2 certification in September 2024, allowing him to provide even more specialized care.

“Continuing my education and advancing my skills allows me to better serve my community,” Wittmer said. “It’s rewarding to help patients get back to doing the things they love, free from pain.”
