What is an Echocardiogram (ECHO)?

An echocardiogram uses high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to create detailed images of the heart’s structure, function, and blood flow. It is one of the most valuable tools in detecting heart conditions early and preventing serious complications.

What can an ECHO detect?

Heart valve disease – Identifies leaks or narrowing in the heart valves.

Types of Echocardiograms We Offer

1. Transthoracic Echocardiogram (TTE)

The most common type of echocardiogram.
A painless, non-invasive ultrasound probe is placed on the chest.

2. Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE)

A more detailed view of the heart using a small probe inserted into the esophagus
Often used when clearer images are needed than a standard ECHO can provide
Available on-site at DCH for added convenience .

3. Stress Echocardiogram (Stress ECHO)

Performed before and after exercise to assess how your heart functions under physical stress.
Helps detect blockages in the coronary arteries and evaluate heart performance.

4. Pediatric Echocardiogram

Specialized ECHO imaging for children to assess congenital heart conditions or monitor heart health
Performed by experienced staff using child-appropriate techniques

We use Doppler ultrasound techniques during our ECHO procedures—such as TTE, TEE, and Stress ECHOs—to evaluate blood flow, pressure, and velocity through the heart’s chambers and valves. This helps detect issues like valve dysfunction, blocked arteries, or abnormal blood flow patterns.
