Calcium Heart Scan

A Calcium Heart Scan measures the amount ofcalcified (hardened) plaque inside your heart's arteries. Calcified plaque can lead to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and appears years before the development of heart disease symptoms. The doctor will use the calcium score to calculate your future risk of coronary artery disease.

Why Should I Have a Scan?

Many people at risk for heart disease have no warning signs or symptoms. Individuals with certain risk factors should inquire about a scan. These risk factors include:

  • Increasing age - Men older than 45 and women older than 55
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Family history of heart disease

Please note that there is no additional benefit of the scan if you already have a diagnosis of coronary artery disease.

What Type of Preparation is Involved?

There is no need for injections, preparations, or fasting. The scan is painless and only takes about 30 minutes. The screening is conducted in the Radiology Department at Daviess Community Hospital. Your results will be mailed to you.
